Breach Proximity Margin
VC-MET-405 — the clearance between a specimen's furthest extent and its containment boundary — the escape-margin metric.
Definition
Breach Proximity Margin is the shortest distance between a specimen's furthest detected extent and its containment boundary (cm), measured by ranging sensors. It is the literal margin before a containment boundary is challenged.
Why it matters
Margin is the most direct escape-risk number in the facility. A shrinking margin — from growth, tendril extension, or specimen movement — is an unambiguous, geometry-based warning that precedes any seal or pressure event.
Formula
M = d_boundary − d_extent [cm] d_extent = furthest qualified point cloud return Measured by LiDAR/ranging per enclosure; the minimum over all returns governs. Decreasing-is-worse.
Inputs
| Input | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ranging | LiDAR point-cloud extent | PhytoSense Mesh |
| Boundary map | Enclosure geometry datum | CHLORA |
| Growth model | Projected extent | CHLORA |
Units & Scale
cm, integer, per enclosure (minimum over returns). Decreasing-is-worse: lower thresholds apply.
Sampling & Source
- Sampled every 5 seconds by enclosure ranging.
- Minimum clearance over all returns governs.
- Growth model projects time-to-threshold for trimming.

Interpretation Guidance
| Band | Reading | Likely Driver | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| > 60 | Ample | Within enclosure | None. |
| 30–60 | Adequate | Growth or movement | Schedule trim; project trend. |
| 10–29 | WARN | Approaching boundary | Trim; review relocation. |
| < 10 | CRIT | Boundary challenged | Immediate trim / relocate. |
