Tendril Reach Excursion
VC-MET-417 — how far a specimen's tendrils extend beyond their datum envelope — a reach and encroachment metric.
Definition
Tendril Reach Excursion is the distance a specimen's tendrils extend beyond their registered datum envelope (cm), measured by ranging and vision. It quantifies encroachment toward boundaries, walkways, and equipment.
Why it matters
Reach excursion is a growth-and-behaviour signal that drives both breach-proximity risk and entanglement hazards around walkways and drones. It schedules trimming and informs the aggression and containment assessments.
Formula
X = max(extent) − datum_envelope [cm beyond datum] Datum envelope registered at last trim; excursion is the furthest qualified return beyond it. Growth model projects time-to-threshold for trim scheduling.
Inputs
| Input | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ranging | Furthest qualified return | PhytoSense Mesh |
| Datum envelope | Last-trim registration | CHLORA |
| Vision | Tendril segmentation | Spectral Canopy Array |
Units & Scale
cm beyond datum, integer, per specimen (maximum return). Increasing-is-worse; upper thresholds apply.
Sampling & Source
- Sampled every 30 seconds by ranging and vision.
- Datum re-registered at each trim.
- Growth model schedules the next trim.

Interpretation Guidance
| Band | Reading | Likely Driver | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–15 | Contained | Within envelope | None. |
| 16–35 | Extending | Active growth | Schedule trim; project trend. |
| 36–55 | WARN | Encroaching | Trim; drone keep-out. |
| > 55 | CRIT | Boundary/entanglement | Immediate trim; isolate. |
