Ethylene Emission
VC-MET-213 — canopy ethylene flux — the plant stress and senescence hormone, read continuously by the mesh.
Definition
Ethylene Emission is the volumetric concentration of ethylene (C₂H₄) in canopy air, in nL·L⁻¹ per hour, measured by electrochemical cells on the PhytoSense Mesh. Ethylene is the principal gaseous stress and ripening hormone.
Why it matters
Rising ethylene is one of the earliest gas-phase markers of canopy stress, wounding, or accelerated senescence. A corridor-wide spike often precedes visible decline and can indicate a containment or climate fault upstream.
Formula
Reported as the zone mean of mesh ethylene cells, baseline- corrected against the intake reference cell: E = mean(cell_i) − E_intake [nL · L⁻¹ · h⁻¹] Cells auto-zero nightly against scrubbed reference air; drift > 5 nL·L⁻¹ flags the cell for service.
Inputs
| Input | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh cells | Electrochemical C₂H₄, per node | PhytoSense Mesh |
| Intake reference | Scrubbed-air baseline | PhytoSense Mesh |
| Zone map | Node-to-zone assignment | CHLORA |
Units & Scale
nL·L⁻¹·h⁻¹, integer resolution, reported as a zone mean with a 1-hour trend. Increasing-is-worse: only upper thresholds apply.
Sampling & Source
- Sampled every 10 minutes across mesh ethylene cells.
- Nightly auto-zero against scrubbed reference air.
- Zone means trended; node outliers localized for triage.

Interpretation Guidance
| Band | Reading | Likely Driver | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5–40 | Baseline | Normal respiration | None. |
| 41–80 | Elevated | Mild stress or ripening | Localize node cluster; inspect. |
| 81–150 | WARN | Active stress event | Dispatch triage; check climate. |
| > 150 | CRIT | Wounding or rapid senescence | Auto-escalate; isolate source. |
